1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - disassembled, cleaned, beadblasted, spring repaired, repair spring was used off a briggs Starter Spring, hole had to be punched in the starter spring, the hole in the points end was drilled to accept a 8x32 screw and nut
(June-14-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - now have got to Deal with the Magna Matic Coil, yes it melted
(June-17-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT -ok this is the later model Coil on the left i will be using after removing the magnetron module - i came up with this after reading Kent Redd article or his idea on fixing the Magna Matic Coil
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - after removing the module im cutting the iron core on the top with the band saw, very carefully
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - now im cutting the iron core on the right side with the band saw
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - now on the left side the wires are very close, im going to cut this with the hacksaw while holding the coil in the vice, after you cut through the small arm lock you see here, the iron core will fall out of the coil then
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - ok now i have removed the coil from the late model core and i have removed the old melted coil from the magna matic core, they say you can pull or push these off, that did not happen here, had to dewire it and then cut the rest off, it had enough tar on it to last another 100 years
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - got the core and things cleaned up a bit, now its time to remove some leafs from the magna matic core where it can fit the new late model coil, im going to center punch this small pin to drill off the bradded end
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - how im going to do this is with a little friend i have, the bottom part is a magnet and the lens will find the center like a rifle scope with cross hairs
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - with a little help with a light, line up the cross hairs on the pin
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - when you find dead center pull the scope out and insert the center punch, be careful not to move the bottom base - then tap the center punch with the hammer and remove
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - center punched and ready to drill
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - not flat and square we will be using wood as to grip and hold the piece solid and steady on both sides and bottom
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - outer leaf is drilled and tapered for the new brad thats coming after we remove some center ones
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - removed 12 inter leafs from the iron core, this will be a good fit for the new coil
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - after removing the shims needed to fit the coil, place the outer leaf back on the core and using an anvil or the back side of a good vice, peen slowly to brad the small pins down in the tapered holes
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - profiling the back side edge of the core as the old clips are to wide to fit in the much smaller core
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - after the rough grinding, used a dremel tool to fine finish the profiling
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - filed and finished
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - now the core clips will fit
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - the magna matic iron core and new late model coil, it's looking good so far
(June-24-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - Soldering Leads
(June-25-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - little motor cleaning
(June-25-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - cleaned beadblased & milling the briggs head on the Broach Machine

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - briggs & stratton head milled & finished
(June-26-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - small drill bits, these are hard to find
(June-26-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - there giving a guy hell on the david bradley site for using torch cleaners for cleaning jets - this is what i use to clean lawnmower jets, on Tecumseh mostly, i can clean one in a minute without waiting 24 hours on a carb cleaner, its fast and more safter for you and the environment, these will remove the crud only and no metal from the jet
(June-26-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - disassembled and ready to jetspray
(June-27-2009)

1963 david bradley 725
PROJECT - clutch pulley edge Broke, i will have to make this
(June-28-2009)

The coils on the Magnematic, P/N 29880 - 292104 will go bad setting on the shelf. The symptom of a bad coil is the engine will run fine at idle but as the engine is throttled up the engine will start missing. Most people will think they have a carb problem. The coil and magnets are under the flywheel. The points and condenser are in the box on the left rear of the engine when the flywheel is facing you. Replacement coils are about $130, BUT I developed a coil conversion using the point type coil from a later B&S engine, The coil used, a two legged version, was used on 2 thru 16 HP B&S engine from the mid-60's until they changed to the Magnetron electronic ignition in 1981. The conversion consist of modifying the core of the later coil to fit in a slightly different place than the 290880 coil. If you would have a coil from a dead push engine the parts cost will be minimal. The conversion instructions can be found in two ways. The first is if you can find a copy of the Nov. 2005 issue of Gas Engine Magazine. The other way is to join the Briggs-N-Stratton group on Yahoo and look in their files section. The files section has it titled Magnematic fix. The name of the artical in GEM is "Cheap Fix"

hunting problem
Put a spark tester between the plug and the plug wire. I think you will find that your carb hunting is cause by an intermittent spark. This is the classic symptom of failure for the 290880 Briggs coil. A fellow engine enthusiast did WHO was having hunting problem with a Briggs Model 14 which uses the same Magnematic ignition system. I sent him the info on my coil conversion which I might add that HE was very skeptical of the conversion untill he applied it to his engine.
